Section 3: Right Reasons
  • What do they know about their physical condition? (may not be relevant)
  • Are they aware of all the options (health, social, spiritual, supportive care
  • Have they had an opportunity to talk to other people (relatives/carers, “chaplain”, advocate)?
  • Have they weighed up the decision?
  • Is this decision right in the context of the maker and their circumstances?
  • Has their opinion been adversely affected by another party?
Remember
If this is a truly informed decision and you don’t suspect any unusual problems, the maker does have the right not to qualify their decision to you. It is best practice to offer the opportunity to discuss their decision.
An individual does not have to justify a valid and applicable ADRT even if it represents a possible unwise decision In order for an individual to make their choice an informed one it is recommended that they discuss their options – however this is not always necessary.
