Section 3: Right Time
  • Has a proper “diagnosis” been made? (although this is not always necessary or relevant)
  • Does the patient currently have capacity? Can the decision making time be delayed to allow return of capacity?
  • Is their any other information they are waiting for that will add to their informed choice / decision?
  • Has there been a trigger? (change to treatment management, illness, bereavement, social issue)
  • Does the person accept the nature of the problem?
  • Is this person able to cope with this decision now? Will there be a better time or environment to approach this subject?
  • Will this pre-empt predicted near / future events?
